These lovely tiles look decidedly Victorian to me, but then again, they could easily be Edwardian. Tiling our floors and in the case of some Eastern Countries, their entire structures, has been with us since the 12th Century AD. And while it’s become traditional, even expected, when we take the time to truly look at them, it’s a marvel to behold.

Tiles comes from all manner of substance, from slate, to clay, from cement to porcelain and while they vary in design, their allure is unmistakable.

Colouring and fashioning these styles is something that comes from one of two ways. Either the design is added after the fact – glazing process, or, it’s a result of encaustic methods; the melding of two –six different colours. From the 13th century onto King Henry VIII enamelled tiles were awfully popular and received a bit of a revival during the Gothic era.

Moving on from the facts, let’s look at the photos. Here we can see a traditional entry or vestibule like we might find in many a Victorian era home anywhere in Britain. The colours and shapes are welcoming and lend authenticity and class to the property. So, with that in mind, it is no wonder that Art of Clean received a call to renew these dated tiles and bring to them a new lease on life.

Over the years we’ve been out on many tile jobs and while the plain, one colour tiles have a beauty all their own – especially when polished, cleaning Victorian or any designed tiling brings with it an added sense of joy and appeal.
